What to Bring on a Multi-day Trip

You'll need two kinds of packing: a day pack you carry each day, and a lodge luggage bag for overnight gear, which we transport between lodges for you. Guided and self-guided trips need mostly the same gear, a few differences are called out below.

Pack for sunshine, rain and cool coastal conditions

The park can deliver sunshine, rain and cool coastal conditions within the same day, at any time of year. In the cooler months, from April to October, bring extra thermal layers and warm socks, mornings and evenings can be crisp even when the days are clear.

Footwear

  • Good sports or hiking shoes, worn in before your trip
  • Shoes secured at the heel for tidal crossings, and for kayaking where your trip includes it
  • Light shoes or slippers to wear at the lodges
  • Walking poles, recommended for stability on uphill and downhill sections

Clothing

  • Thermal layer close to the skin, plus extra thermal layers and socks from April to October
  • Quick-dry shirts, shorts or trousers
  • Warm wool or polarfleece layer
  • Waterproof jacket with a hood (disposable rain coats are also for sale at our offices)
  • Sunhat
  • Underwear and socks for each day

If your trip includes kayaking, pack an extra set of hiking clothes in case you get wet. Avoid cotton, especially denim, it takes a long time to dry.

Day-pack essentials

  • Reusable water bottle, filled at our office and lodges (around 2 litres recommended)
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and sunhat
  • Insect repellent
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Phone or camera, with charger or power bank
  • Swimwear and towel (optional)
  • Essential medication
  • Personal snacks

Keep essential medication in your day pack, not in your overnight luggage bag, so it's with you every day. Please avoid disposable wipes or tissues, they add litter to the park.

Overnight gear

  • Casual evening clothing
  • Light shoes or slippers
  • Underwear and socks
  • Sleepwear
  • Personal toiletries
  • Flashlight or torch
  • Chargers for the following day

A torch is genuinely useful, our lodges generate their own power and on rare occasions supply can be interrupted.

Lodge-based

We take care of your overnight luggage.

Pack your overnight gear into the lodge luggage bag we supply. On guided trips, our team transfers it between lodges for you each day, so you only ever carry your day pack on the track. On self-guided trips, you carry your own overnight bag between lodges.

Guided and self-guided differences.

Guided

  • Your guide manages the itinerary, transfers and lodge bookings each day
  • You still carry your own water, medication, sun protection and day clothing
  • Kayakers should pack extra dry clothing in case they get wet, if your trip includes kayaking
  • Casual evening wear and light shoes for the lodge
  • Overnight bag transferred between lodges for you by our team
  • Credit card or EFTPOS for the lodge bar, no cash

Self-guided

  • Download the Wilsons Abel Tasman app and your trip notes before you leave phone coverage, make sure you have the correct route (northbound or southbound)
  • Mobile reception varies through the park, you may need higher ground for signal
  • Personal first-aid kit with plasters, blister prevention and antiseptic
  • You carry your own water, medication, sun protection and day clothing
  • You carry your own overnight bag between lodges
  • Some lodges are self-catered, check your itinerary for what's provided
  • Light shoes or slippers for the lodge
  • Credit card or EFTPOS for wifi access and the lodge bar, no cash

Especially useful if you're self-guided

Download the app before you go

Download the Wilsons Abel Tasman app to your phone, then download the trip you have booked, northbound or southbound, before you leave phone coverage. It's handy for guided walkers too.

Personal health essentials.

Bring a personal first-aid kit with plasters, blister prevention and antiseptic, particularly useful if you're self-guided. Keep essential medication in your day pack rather than your overnight luggage, so it's with you every day of your trip.

If you have a medical condition or health requirement our team should know about, please let us know when you book, so we can plan for it.

Leave valuables behind.

Please do not bring valuable items or travel documents. There is safe storage at our Motueka office.

Phones, wifi and payments.

Mobile reception is limited throughout the park and varies depending on your provider, you may find coverage on headlands or elevated, open ground. Complimentary wifi is available at our lodges. Download trip information, maps and anything else you need before you leave phone coverage.

The lodge bar accepts credit card or EFTPOS, please don't rely on cash only.
